Montenegro is a small village about 4km from the center of Faro, north of Faro Airport on the Algarve of Portugal. It is named after a patch of trees that used to be visible from Faro and was, until recently, mostly inhabited by local farmers and fishermen working in the Ria Formosa and selling goods in Faro.
Today, Montenegro is now covered with luxury villas and holiday homes, occupied by the wealthy. Development also caters for students at the nearby University of Algarve. The main road from Faro Airport to Faro itself passes through Montenegro.
