St Patrick's Catholic Church stands in the hear of Edinburgh Old Town, a short distance from St Giles Cathedral and Edinburgh Castle. It is an attraction for those interested in the life of the Venerable Margaret Sinclair, who is venerated within the Resurrection Chapel. The church also contains a small museum about her.
St Patrick's was built between 1771-74 in for the Scottish Episcopal Church. It was then sold to the United Presbyterian Congregation in 1818 who then sold the chapel to the Catholic Church in 1856 for £4000. At that time many Irish Catholics were settling in Cowgate area of Edinburgh. St Patrick's was officially opened as a Catholic church on Sunday 3rd August 1856 by Bishop Gillis.
In 1898 the sanctuary was extended and a High Altar installed. The Mortuary Chapel was erected in 1921, dedicated to the 320 men of the parish who had died during WWI. The Lady Chapel (Saints Chapel) was installed in 1924 and the facade with statues of St Patrick and St Brigid above the entrance dates from 1929.
