Kealakomo Viewpoint - Chain of Craters Road - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Panorama taken from the Kealakomo viewpoint on Chain of Craters Road in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The scrub was broken in streaks where the a'a lava flows of the early 1970's had crawled down the hill, leaving dark black scars in it's wake. The a'a lava is clearly seen in the panoramic picture I took at this point.

The Kealakomo lookout is at an altitude of 610m on Chain of Craters Road in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. It lies between Muliwai a Pele and Halono Kahakai viewpoint and has a covered picnic site. The vegetation here is much more lush than at the Muliwai a Pele site further up the volcano.
The lava shown here was formed during the 1969-74 eruption. Naulu Trail heads north from Kealakomo, joining the Kalapana Trail and Napau Trail after about 2 miles. Chain of Craters road continues on until a point where lava flowed over the road in recent times. Close to this point lava enters the sea through a series of 11km long lava tubes.
