I was struck by the jumble of 'a'a lava which made the landscape around here, and then by the lush backdrop of the surrounding slops of the Kapapala Forest Reserve. The contrast was very marked, so I pulled over onto the side of the road, climbed a bit of a ridge to get a better view and took this panoramic picture.

Travel and Getting There:
The Ponohahoa Chasms lie about half way between Pahala and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (about 12 miles from each) on Highway 11.
