Another scenic panorama showing the landscape on Hawaii Island. There are, I think, 19 different distinct climates that are found on Hawaii Island, from desert to lush tropical forest, sunny beaches to snow capped peaks. As I drove along Waikoloa Road the climate and grassland changed dramatically. And I like landscape panoramas. The boundary zone between black lava and this grassland is a little further down towards the coast, quite visible in the satellite image of the area.

Waikoloa Road rises from the coast on west Hawaii Island for 12 miles to the higher Mamalahoa Highway (H180). As the road rises from the coast the surrounding country side changes quite quickly as the climate changes with the altitude. Here more grasses grow in the lava whereas at the coast the conditions are hotter. The grassland continues to get more lush as the road continues to rise. This panoramic picture was taken just below Waikoloa and Waikola Golf Course.

Travel and Getting There:
Take Highway 19 north from Kailua-Kona and turn right onto Waikola Road just after passing the junction for the Royal Waikoloan and the Hilton Waikoloan Village resorts. Waikoloa and the Waikoloa Golf Course are about 6 miles along the road.
