When it comes to the buildings on Portland, most are naturally built of the local Portland Stone. This is also true of the churches, as seen in this picture of St. George's church, surrounded by a graveyard whose grave stones are also local. On a clear day the church and stones are quite bright, but on a misty day the atmosphere is definitely moody. The church is unusual as it has two pulpits inside. This photo was taken fairly late in the afternoon from the graveyard just to the south of the church itself.

St George's Church was built between 1754 and 1766 to replace St Andrew's Church near Rufus Castle as a place of worship. The soil on Portland is not very deep, and the location of the churhc was one of the few places where it was possible to bury people the required 6 feet deep. The church is built out of local stone and fell into disrepair once All Saints was consecrated in Easton in 1917. She suffered bomb damage during WWII and was abandoned. In the 1960's a society of friends of the church formed and have since overseen a successful restoration project, returning the church to it's former state.

From Dorchester take the A354 about 8 miles south through Weymouth and then onto Portland and Portland Bill. St. George's Church is on the junction of Weston Road and Reforme on the west side of Portland.
