Kimmeridge Bay - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
This panorama was taken from one of the rocky shelves heading out into Kimmeridge Bay form the beach. The picture was taken on an overcast day. At low tide these rocky shelves are exposed, but they are covered again as the tide comes in. My feet began to get wet as I took this image. The rocky shelves can be seen in the satellite view of the Google map of Dorset.
Kimmeridge Bay - FURTHER INFORMATION
Kimmeridge Bay - Kimmeridge visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Kimmeridge Bay' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Dorset.
The beach at Kimmeridge is rocky, made of broken slate from the cliffs behind. The bay has much to offer in terms of coastal walks and fossil hunting. On the clifftops is a 'nodding donkey' oil pump. From here it is possible to walk along the cliffs to Swanage in the west and Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door in the east. This is part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.
At low tide much of the bay is exposed and is filled with rock pools. During the summer months people can be seen snorkeling and scuba diving in the bay. The cliffs are soft and the stones contain soft fossils.
