South Quay of Entrance to Weymouth Harbour - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT

This panorama showing the channel from Weymouth Inner Harbour to the outer harbour and the sea was taken from Trinity Road. Both sides of this channel are lined with shops and restaurants. The Inner harbour is off to the right, and tall, masted ships can only enter at specific times when Weymouth Town Bridge is raised. The harbour is still a working fishing port, as can be seen from some of the fishing boats moored alongside th quay. Several tourist boats offering trips around the surrounding coastline also depart from this point.

Weymouth has had an active port here for thousands of year, with records dating back to the Roman times. Today this bustling port and marina continue to serve both the fishing and leisure industries, as well as provide ferry services to other areas. The harbour contains large marinas for both short and long term moorings, and provides easy access to some of the most beautiful coastline along the South Coast of England, an area designated as a World Heritage Site and also known as the Jurassic Coast. Boats from Weymouth can often be found anchored in Lulworth Cove or off Durdle Door. The 2012 Olympic sialing events will take place around Weymouth and Portland Bill, hosted by the Weymouth Bay and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNAS) which is located on Portland Bill. One of the best places to appreciate the lay of the coastline is from the top of Portland Bill near the Heights Hotel.
