Tour by Panoramic Earth, powered by MAI Technology Ltd Mayrhofen - the ResortMayrhofen is largest resort in the Zillertal valley in the Tyrol mountains in Austria. Mayrhofen lies at 650 meters between the Penken and the Ahorn mountains which provide ski runs in the winter and hiking and mountain biking in the summer. Above the town, and above the snow layer, is the Hintertux glacier, which means that skiing is available all year round. The area also popular with walkers in the summer and on the Hintertuxer glacier is the Spannagelhöhle (Spannagel cave). At 2,521 meters, this is the highest show cave in Austria and is open to the public through guided tours. Access to the Spannagel show cave is via the Spannagelhaus, the mountain hut situated just 150m below the top of the cable car station. Mayrhofen - the Ski AreaThis area has some of the most modern lifts in Austria which open up vast areas of slopes for both on- and off-piste skiing. The local ski area is extensive, but the Super Zillertal Pass increases the maximum to 452 KM including the Hintertux glacier. From Mayrhofen, the main ski area is serviced by either the Penkenbahn or the Horbergbahn. Both are high-speed gondolas and a shuttle bus from all the hotels in the town drops of and picks up skiers every every 15 minutes during the winter. At the top of Penken there is a childrens' center and beginner slopes. From here the Penken-Express, a six-seater high-speed lift, takes skiers up to slopes suitable for intermediate and advanced skiers. Slopes off to the left allow beginners to avoid the steeper sections and head back to the top station of the gondola. From the top of the Penken-Express, skiers can also head toward Gerent by skiing down to the top of the Horbergbahn. From here lifts access the wide-open, off-piste, powder-filled terrain of the Gerent. Further up the Horberg Hallow a group of lifts all meet at the station of a 150-person cable car which ascends to more open areas at altitude of about 7,217 feet. The snow conditions here are excellent, and many expert and advanced skiers head for this part of the resort. The slopes are also wide enough to allow intermediate skiers the chance to push themselves while still having room to get out of difficulty. From the top of the cable car, skiers can drop into the Tuxertal ski area made up of both the Rastkogel and Eggalm areas. Both these areas are excellent for beginner and intermediate skiers with plenty of off-piste slopes for the more advanced. Both of these areas now connect with the main Mayrhofen ski areas by bus. The alternative is to ski back to Mayrhofen by taking the Rastkogelbahn back to the ridge followed by another six-person high-speed chair lift. Then ski into the Hofberg/Gerent area to return to Mayrhofen. The Ahorn is popular with beginner and intermediate skiers. The area is well covered with snow cannons on the lower sections ensuring that skiers can drop right back Mayrhofen. The famous Ebenwald slalom trail run for 5.5 km (3 miles) down this mountain. The Hintertuxer glacier opens at the end of the valley rising from 1,476 meters (4,921 feet) to a height of 3170 meters (10,564 feet). This provides an amazing vertical drop of 1,633 meters (5,443 feet). Not surprisingly, this has become one of the top training areas for ski and snowboard teams from all over the world. There are about 50 miles of trails above the ground station, and skiers can have fun visiting the various huts located on the mountainside. A very popular and exhilarating run is the trail from the Grosser Kaserer (3210m / 10,700 ft) down to the gondola over huge Mogul fields. For an alternative, a more relaxing intermediate run leads from the top of the Gefrorene Wand to the Spannagelhaus, a cozy Alpine hut serving excellent food. In total there are 146 kilometres of slopes and 46 lifts for all skiers and boarders. These provide something for all levels of skiers 40 km of blue, 86km red and 20km of black runs. A special attraction of the ski region is the "150er Tux". This new lift transports one in just 5 minutes from the Tappental, to the highest point of the ski area, the Wangelspitz, at 2500 metres above sea level. Once up there, one can enjoy the dreamlike view over the mountain peaks of Zillertal, and then ski down the 3.5km long panoramic run. From the top of the Wangelspitz one can also ski down to the lifts of the Rastkogel area.
