Poole Harbour - Kitesurfing

Photographer Description of Poole Harbour - Kitesurfing

It was late in the day when I took this panorama, the day was very windy, but blowing in an off-shore direction. Whilst there were some people surfing and windsurfing off Bournemouth and Poole beaches, a large group were in this popular part of Poole harbour. As one person told me, with the direction of the wind that day, it was not possible to get blown off-shore from here. Given the temperatures of British waters, wet suits are recommended, as the kitesurfer pictured here demonstrates. You can see numerous kites in the sky in this picture, and Brownsea Island lies in the middle of the harbour. While the cloudy skies may not be best for most beach users, the winds and clouds are more than welcome by these enthusiasts.

Poole Harbour - Kitesurfing - Further Information

Kitesurfing and windsurfing are both popular pastimes and it is not unusual to find the sky full of sails and kites. Whitely Lake / Blackpool in Poole Harbour are very popular spots for both sports. The area of the harbour is shallow and well protected by Sandbanks, making it safer than the open seas. There is parking available along Banks Road which runs all the way around the bay. Sandbanks itself is one of the most expensive areas or real estate in the UK. Nearby is a large hotel with open views over both the harbour and Sandbanks beach. Whilst this area is the domain of the kitesurfing and windsurfing community, other parts of the harbour and beaches are popular for other water sports. Surfing and body boarding takes place along the sea front, especially around Bournemouth Pier and Boscombe Pier. Much of the rest of the harbour is best explored by kayak, and local kayaking clubs often hold trips along the coast.

Travel and Getting There:
From Poole take the B3369 Sandbanks Road around Poole Harbour. This becomes Banks road. From Bournemouth take the A35 road to the Fitzharris roundabout at Westbourne, and then The Avenue (B6035) past Branksome Chine and through Canford Cliffs to Sandbanks.
