Sámara Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica, and one of the most popular tourist destinations, described in 'Lonely Planet - Destination Costa Rica: Off the Beaten Track' as 'One of the safest and prettiest beaches in the country.' Sámara is on the western coast of the Nicoya Peninsula in the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica. The beach is protected by a long coral reef and in the middle of the bay is a wooded island. Underwater, divers will be greeted by stunning views and fish on the coral reefs and a number of underwater caves.
Sámara is well developed, and has numerous hotels for all budgets as well as Bed & Breakfast and holiday apartments. The beach is popular for wind-surfing and swimmers alike. Along side the hotels and tourism is a thriving fishing and faming industry, with many of the hotels and restaurants in Sámara serving food grown, harvested of caught in the local area.
The local area is also full of interesting things to do and see. Just 8km south is Playa Carrillo and 35 minutes away is Nicoya. Also within easy driving distances are the Ostional Refuge with a turtle nesting ground, Playa Grande where Baula turtles lay eggs, the caves of Barra Honda National Park, the crocodiles and birds of Palo Verde National Park and Santa Rosa National Park. Further afield are the Monteverde Cloud Forest, the sulphur springs and volcanoes of Rincon de la Vieja National Park and the Volcano and Lake Arenal.
