Gold Hill - Top

Photographer Description of Gold Hill - Top

This panorama was taken from near the top of Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, giving a view down the steep cobbled lane. As you can see in the picture, there are a number of restaurants and cafes near the top, as well as small art gallery. The image also shows the view of the Dorset hills beyond the bottom of the lane.

Gold Hill - Top - Further Information

Gold Hill in Shaftesbury is probably one of the most famous landmarks of the town, and more a tourist attraction than a functioning street. Forever now associated with Hovis, who used it in their bread adverts, Gold Hill descends steeply from just behind the town centre and gives a great view over the distant hill. At the top of the hill are a couple of restaurants, cafes and an art gallery, which you can see in this panorama. The lane is lined with small picturesque cottages on the left as you go down, and on the right is a vast wall. It is sometimes mistakenly called 'Golden Hill'.

Travel and Getting There:
Shaftesbury is about 20 miles from Salisbury (and Salisbury Cathedral), 12 miles from Blandford Forum and 16 miles from Sherborne. From Salisbury take the A30 west to Shaftesbury, this road continues on to Sherborne. From Blandford Forum take the A350 north.
