Wihan Phra Mongkhonbophit - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
The inside of Wihan Phra Mongkhonbophit is a very busy place, as this panoramic picture shows. There is a continuous stream of people coming and going to present offerings to the Buddha statue within and say prayers. The low light levels meant that quite long exposures were use, so the people appear blurred in the image. There was also not much room between Phra Mongkhon Bophit (as this Buddha image is known) and the walls.

Wihan Phra Mongkhonbophit is next to the compound of Wat Phra Si Sanphet in the northwest of the old town of Ayatthaya. Nearby is Wat Phraram.
This panoramic image was taken from inside the temple, and shows the pilgrims and worshipers praying before the Buddha image known as Phra Mongkhon Bophit. The statue was originally enshrined outside the Grand Palace to the east of here, but King Songtham had it transferred to this site and covered with a Mondop. This Mondop was destroyed by a fire caused by lightning and then replaces by a larger sanctuary (Maha Wihan). Less than 10 years later the Burmese sacked Ayutthaya (1767) and destroyed the sanctuary yet again. The current restoration is not as finely worked as the previous ones.
Wihan Phra Mongkhonbophit used to be the Sanam Luang, where royal cremations took place. The Sanam Luang moved to Phramen Ground of Bangkok.
