Badbury Rings Outer Rampart - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
This panorama was an attempt to line up the top of the outer rampart of Badbury Rings with the skyline. It has not come out all that clear, but does give some idea of the steepness of the ramparts themselves and the dip between them. These ramparts would have been topped with a palisade to give extra defense.
Badbury Rings Outer Rampart - FURTHER INFORMATION
Badbury Rings Outer Rampart - Wimborne Minster visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Badbury Rings Outer Rampart' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Dorset.
This panorama was taken from part way up the lea side of the outer earth mound rampart of Badbury Rings, the ancient Iron Age hill fort in Dorset, close to both Wimborne Minster and Blandford Forum. Had defenders managed to breach this defensive wall, they would still have had to go down to the exposed ditch and scale yet another rampart to penetrate the castle. For this reason the most attacks focused on the wooden gates that protected the entrance paths that transected the earthen rings.
For more information about the history of this Bronze Age hill fort, please see the main Badbury Rings panorama. The site is now managed by the National Trust, entrance is free.
