Kolvananuuro Nature Reserve lies within Kolvananuuro Gorge, a deep gorge in the North Karelia Region or Eastern Finland formed millions of years ago by shifting bedrock. The area is beautiful with lush vegetation rich in wildlife. Because of this, Kolvananuuro is popular with visitors who enjoy the outdoors and admire the untouched landscape. The steep sides of the gorge are covered with pine forests while along parts of bottom runs a brook feeding bog ponds and marsh populated by both Northern and Southern ferns. The brook surfaces near to Pieni Koirilampi Lake.
Visitors are recommended to spend at least half a day to explore the park. There are 6.5km of marked trails within the gorge and the circular, 5km Uuron reitti Nature Trail links the two parking sites. For the more adventurous, a trail links Kolvananuuro Nature Reserve to Kolvananuuro Nature Reserve to the 63Km long Kolinpolku Trail and hikers can camp in lean-to shelters overnight. At the right times of the year, the reserve is rich in wild berries and mushrooms.
