Photographer Description of Winchester
The Guild Hall in Winchester is an impressive building that dominates the lower part of The Broadway, close to Winchester Cathedral. It is opposite the Winchester bus station, and welcomes visitors as the exit it. This was an overcast day, which, while great for photographing the inside of the cathedral, was not so good for external shots. The pin on the Google map set just on the opposite side of the road from the Guild Hall in the Satellite view, which is where I was standing when taking the picture.Winchester - Further Information
Winchester is a very important city in Hampshire between London and Southampton, famous for the Winchester Cathedral. It is a very popular tourist destination in the summer as thousands of people flock to the city to see the cathedral and the other old sights around the area.Winchester has also become well known as a result the motorway bypass built through Twyford down in 1994, a site that was up until then an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This provoked huge demonstrations at the time, but did not prevent the destruction of the down.
Travel Directions and Getting There:
Winchester is about 70 miles from London and 14 miles from Southampton near to junction 9 or the M3 motorway. At junction 9 take the A272 exit to Winchester. If coming from Salisbury (30 miles) take the A36 Southampton Road and join the M27 heading north. This then joins the M3. There are direct trains and coaches from London to Winchester.
