Clee Hill Panorama

Photographer Description of Clee Hill Panorama

Panorama from the summit of Clee Hill, Titterton, Shropshire. The Clee Hill 'Golf Balls' are shown - these are radio repeater stations for the NATS.

Clee Hill Panorama - Further Information

Clee Hill is about 5 miles north-east of Ludlow and is a about over 1700 feet high. The Clee Hills are the highest summit south of the Pennines. On the top of the hill are the Clee Hill 'Golf Balls', which are part of a radar and radio station for NATS (National Air Traffic Service) which manages air traffic over the United Kingdom. This radar station seen in this panoramic picture is clearly visible if you zoom in on the satellite image on the Google map below the panorama. From the top of Titterstone Clee Hill there is a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside in Shropshire, which, on a clear day, extends for miles.

The area is was heavily quarried for the local igneous rock, called Dolerite, and also for the iron, copper and limestone. Much of the local landscape has been shaped in some way by the past quarrying industry, and a local railway, the Ludlow & Clee Hill Railway, was built to serve several large quarries east of Ludlow. Many of the relics of the industry still remain, reminiscent of the former times, much like the Flat Loades of Cornwall.

The nearest villages are Cleeton St. Mary and Bitterley. This area is about 40 miles west of Birmingham. There are numerous hotels in Ludlow and many more Bed and Breakfast (B&B) places in the surrounding area.

Travel and Getting There:
From Birmingham, take the A456 past Kidderminster, and then A4117 towards Ludlow. Between the villages of Cleehill and Farden a small country road called Dhustone Road heads off north up Clee Hill and to the NATS Sation.
