Charmouth Cliffs - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT

The hills of Dorset descend steeply to the coastline at Charmouth. Where they have been eroded by the sea, they form unstable cliffs from which fossils are continuously being exposed. This is a very active part of the Jurassic Coast where marine creatures of 200 million years ago come face to hand with eager fossil hunters of today. This panoramic picture shows the surrounding hills and the dramatic views along the Dorset coastline. The panorama was taken in the picnic area beside the Heritage Centre and also shows some of the houses of Charmouth.

Charmouth Cliffs - FURTHER INFORMATION

Charmouth Cliffs - Charmouth visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Charmouth Cliffs' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Dorset.

This panorama shows the view along the Dorset coastline from the cliffs next to the Heritage Centre at Charmouth Beach. The area here is famous for both the coastal walks, especially to Golden Cap, the highest cliff on the South Coast of England, and for fossil hunting.

From this vantage point one gets a panoramic view of the surrounding hills of Dorset and the coastline. Charmouth is in Lyme Regis Bay, and the town of Lyme Regis lies to the west. To the east the coastline rises up to Stonebarrow Hill and then descends past the hamlet of St. Gabriel (much of which has been washed into the sea) before climbing again to Golden Cap. Beyond this lies Seatown and West Bay. In the panorama it is just possible to follow the coastline beyond Golden Hill past Abbotsbury towards Portland and Portland Bill.

There is car parking at Stonebarrow Hill.

TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE

Charmouth lies off the A35 which links Bridport to Lyme Regis. The village is a couple of miles east of Lyme Regis. In the village Lower Sea Lane leads from the A35 down to the sea front and car parking at Stonebarrow Hill.
