Fontana di Trevi - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT

This panorama of the Trevi Fountain was taken in the afternoon. The fountain is mostly in shade in the morning, which means that the only time to take the picture is when all the tourists are gathered around. The square gets very busy during the day as the Trevi fountain is one of the most famous and popular tourist attractions in Rome. There is a steady stream of coins being tossed into the fountain by visitors, which is meant to secure one's future visit to Rome.

The Trevi Fountain (Fontana di Trevi) is the most famous fountain of Rome. It stands at the intersection of three roads, hence the name (tre vie = three roads in Italian). The fountain is very popular with tourists who are often seen throwing coins over their shoulders backwards into the fountain, which is meant to guarantee one's return visit to Rome.

The Trevi Fountain was designed by Nicola Salvi and was completed in 1762. It is designed so that visitors will hear the fountain before they can see it. The central figures of the fountain are Neptune and two Tritons with two winged sea horses, one of which is wild and one of which is calm. The represents the differing moods of the sea.

The fountain is the terminus of the Vergine aqueduct, built by Agrippa during the reign of Augustus, in 19BC bringing water to Rome from the Salone springs some 19 km away. This aqueduct also supplies water to the famous fountains of the Piazza Navona (la Fontana dei Fiumi) and Piazza di Spagna.

Several other famous fountains or the world are modeled on the Trevi Fountain. One such is 'La Cascada' shown on the map of Barcelona.
