Umbracle - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Taking this panorama inside the Umbracle was also a chance to get out of the sun. At the time I was taking the picture there was a class of art students drawing various parts of the building, seen in this panoramic sitting on the benches. The wooden slats of the Umbracle make the structure both sheltered and graceful.
Umbracle - FURTHER INFORMATION
Umbracle - Barcelona visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Umbracle' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Catalonia.
The Umbracle is on the western edge of the Parc de la Ciutadella on the edge of Passeig del Picasso. It is jut south of the the Geological Museum and the Hivernacle, another plant house.
The Umbracle was built for the 1888 Universal Exhibition of Barcelona (at the same time as many other features of the park). It is a wood and brick shaded plant house providing housing for plants that normally grow in the shade of tropical forests. There are walkways through the Umbracle and various benches where people can sit and rest. The Umbracle was designed by Fontseré, and the patterning of the wooded slats cast playful shadows on the underlying area. The structure has a light and airy feel, and is very relaxing.
