Serpentine Bridge - Further Information

The Serpentine Bridge marks the boundary between Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens in London. It crosses over the divide between the Serpentine and Long Water. Near to the bridge are the Serpentine Gallery, Albert Memorial and Princess Diana Memorial Fountain. Serpentine Bridge was built in the 1820s by John Rennie when King George IV renovated the park.

The Serpentine is an artificial lake, created by Queen Caroline around 1730 by damming the Westbourne Stream. At the northern end of Long Water are the Italian Gardens, filled with fountains. The waters then flow under Serpentine Bridge to the lake proper, in which there is a swimming section called the Serpentine Lido. On the northern edge is the Serpentine Restaurant serving drinks and food to tourists. The lake drains from the eastern end and flows underground to the River Thames. The lake has become a tourist attraction and boats can be hired. The lake is also home to The Solarshuttle, the largest solar powered ferry that takes up to 42 people from the north to south sides.
