Castell de Montjuic - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
This panorama was taken from one of the parapets on the southeast corner of the Castell de Montjuïc overlooking Barcelona Harbour. The port is in the foreground, and the city extends eastwards from it. The bulk of the castle lies to the northwest, this panoramic image shows the central buildings as well as the view along the parapet.

The Castell de Montjuïc stands on the top of Muntanya de Montjuïc in Barcelona. This panorama shows the view along the coast and over the harbour and port of Barcelona. The city extends to the east, and the industrial port continues to the west. The World Trade Centre is just about visible, picked out by the tower of the cable car that serves Montjuïc. There is a second image showing the panoramic view over Barcelona from the northwest corner of the castle, which give a much better view over the city and the mountains behind it.
The current castle mostly dates from the 18th-century, but this is predated by an earlier castle built in in 1640 during the War of the Segadors to resist Felipe IV's forces. This earlier structure was expanded and improved between 1751 and 1779 to form the present building. The Castell de Montjuïc was a symbol of centralist repression and of the abolition of Catalan liberties. At one time it was a military prison. Today teh castle contains the Museu Militar (Military Museum). The Funicular de Montjuïc ascends from near the Fundació Joan Miró to the castle.
