Plaça de Tetuan

Photographer Description of Plaça de Tetuan

This panorama was taken from Plaça de Tetuan showing the monument that stands in the middle of the square. As can be seen in the panoramic picture, there is little else in the square and the monument stands in splendid isolation. The area around the Plaça de Tetuan has numerous hotels.

Plaça de Tetuan - Further Information

The Plaça de Tetuan is on the junction of Via de les Corts Catalanes and Passieg de Sant Joan. Nearby attractions include the Temple de la Sagrada Familia and Plaça de Toros Monumental. A short walk to the south are the Arc de Triomf and the attractions and museums around the Parc de la Ciutadella. The Plaça Tetuan metro station is here. The area has numerous cheap hotels and hostels dotted around and is quite a popular are in which people stay, though it is a little east of the main tourist areas of Barcelona. If staying in the area, ensure that your hotel / hostel room does not face the main roads, which are quite busy.

In the center of the square is a large statue, the Monument a Dr Bartolomeu Robert. Dr Bartomeu Robert i Yarzábal was born in Mexico and moved to Barcelona. He became the mayor for 6 months and in that time refused to impose a new tax on the city as he carried out a census. As a symbol of Catalan national identity the statue, which was originally unveiled in la Plaça de la Universitat in 1910 to large crowds. Franco wanted it destroyed because of the Catalan symbolism, but the then mayor had the monument discreetly removed and stored in a shed in the Carrer de Wellington where it rested until 1975. After much restoration the monument was then re-erected in the Plaça de Tetuan with an unveiling in 1985.
