Montreal is the second-largest city in Canada and the largest city in the province of Quebec. The city was originally called 'Ville-Marie' (Mary City), but became known as Montréal by the end of the 17th century, possibly after the the name of the three-head hill, Mont Royal' (Mount Royal) at the heart of the city.
