Plaça de Catalunya

Photographer Description of Plaça de Catalunya

Plaça de Catalunya is very busy, probably the busiest square in Barcelona. Full of tourists and those offering services along with one of the main tourist information centers of the city. The square is surrounded by hotels and links to La Rambla. This picture was taken in the afternoon.

Plaça de Catalunya - Further Information

Plaça de Catalunya (Spanish: Plaza de Cataluña) is one of the most famous squares in Barcelona. It is considered by many to be the very centre of Barcelona, and the point where the old city (Barri Gòtic and Raval, in Ciutat Vella) and the 19th century-built Eixample meet. One of the main Tourist Information Centres is in the square.

Plaça de Catalunya is full of both tourists and pigeons. The large square is the meeting point of several main roads, including the famous La Rambla, which links the square with the Mirador a Colom (Christopher Columbus monument) at Port Vell. It contains several large monuments and statues, seating areas and fountains. The square is surrounded by office buildings and banks. There are several 3 and 4 star hotels around the square including the Hotel Continental, Hotel Pulitzer, Hotel Regina and the Catalunya Plaza Hotel.

This panorama was taken near the middle of the vast plaza, and shows the patterning on the floor. The layout of the square is best seen from the satellite view of the Google map of Barcelona. The oval patterned area then becomes clear with a star in the middle. Each of the corners of the square contains a fountain. Plaça de Catalunya is the main drop off point for coaches linking Barcelona to the international airport.
