Casa Milà - La Pedrera

Photographer Description of Casa Milà - La Pedrera

This panorama shows the outside of Casa Milà, better known as La Pedrera, in Barcelona. The picture was taken from across the road in order to get in the full height. The image opens facing the cascading front of the building, which has no vertical lines in it. The panoramic also shows the other buildings in the area.

Casa Milà - La Pedrera - Further Information

Casa Milà (often called La Pedrera) is one of the best known buildings of Barcelona, a hugely popular tourist attraction and a 'must see' destination for fans of Antoní Gaudí. It was built between 1906 and 1912 for for Roger Segimon de Milà and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Today Casa Milà - La Pedrera is owned by the bank Caixa Catalunya, who sponsor numerous events there.

From the outside the undulating balconies have been likened to a series of waves, or a cliff face with a series of caves. The iron-wrought balconies were improvised on the spot by Josep Maria Jujol. Casa Milà was dubbed a quarry (Pedrera)during construction. This name has stuck and people more frequently now refer to the building as 'La Pedrera' rather than 'Casa Milà'.
