The Universidade de Aveiro is widely regarded as being one of the most dynamic and innovative universities of Portugal. It was founded in 1973 and specializes in Science and Technology. It has a number of very active research units developing R&D programmes targeted at both the national business community and the significant regional industry, in fields ranging from telecommunications to industrial engineering. The university has studies in the following fields:
* Electronics Telecommunication and Informatics
* Environmental Engineering
* Civil Engineering
* Physics Engineering
* Geological Engineering
* Biology
* Biology and geology (teachers)
* Chemistry
* Chemical Engineering

There are about 12,000 students, and the university runs undergraduate, post graduate and PhD programs.

This panorama shows some of the campus buildings. The red brick building shown in this panoramic picture to the left of the viewing platform is the library, designed by the architects Gonçalo Byrne and Manuel Aires Mateus. They also designed Edifício da Reitoria building, which is back down the stairs and on the other side of the square.
