Aveiro is the capital of the District of Aveiro. It is situated on the Atlantic coast in north Portugal, and is an industrial city with a population of about 50,000 and an important port. The city is laced with waterways and canals which are often used for transport and getting around. Because of this, Aveiro is sometimes referred to as the 'Venice of Portugal'.
Aveiro is famous in Portugal for the traditional sweets that are made locally. These are the ovos-moles and the trouxas de ovos, which are both made from eggs. The city is also famous for the University of Aveiro, which is widely regarded as one of the most dynamic and innovative universities of Portugal, attracting thousands of students to the area each year.
