The Greek Theatre (Teatre Grec) in Barcelona does not date from the times of the Greeks at all. It was built by Ramon Raventós for the 1929 fair in an abandoned quarry on the slope of the Montjuïc mountain, close to the Fundacio Joan Miro, the Theatre Mercat de les Flors and the Jardins del Laribal.
In the Greek Theartre concentrically arranged rows of seats surround the deep stage, which even today is used for perfomances (Greek classics, etc.). The theater is surrounded by the Baroque-influenced Jardí Amargs gardens, loggia and terraces. Here is a sculpture by Josep Viladomat, entitled 'La noia de la trena'. During the summer months the Teatre Grec offers a nightly programme of dance, theatre, song and concert performances. Nowadays, the festival that bears the theatre's name brings one of the best artistic programmes of the year to the city. During the Grec Festival performances are also put on at the Instituto del Teatro, the Mercat de les Flors, the Teatre Lliure and the Plaça del Rei. Children's performances are put on at the the Picornell swimming pool.
