Liège is the principal economic and cultural centre of Wallonia, Belgium. It is the capital city of the province of Liège, built a the valley of the river Meuse (or Maas) near the eastern borders of Belgium, close to the Netherlands and Germany. Other translations of Liège - Walloon: Lidje, Dutch: Luik, German: Lüttich. Up till 1949 the name of the city was written as Liége.
