This panoramic image was taken from outside the front of Norwich Cathedral and shows the massive church facade. Entrance to the cathedral interior is via the West Door. The church is built mainly of Caen stone, a pale honey-coloured limestone from Normandy, complimented by Norfolk flints and stone from Northamptonshire. At a height of 315 feet (96m), Norwich Cathedral boast the second highest spire in England (after Salisbury Cathedral) and the largest monastic cloister. It is widely regarded as one of the finest complete Romanesque buildings in Europe.
Norwich Cathedrals is a vast building, whose origins date from the late 11C when Herbert de Losinga bought the bishopric of East Anglia from the Crown and laid down plans for the cathedral. By the middle of the 12C the building was almost complete. The current floorplan is true to the original design, almost unique among English cathedrals. The remains of Bishop Herbert de Losinga are interred under a black slab in front of the high altar.
Norwich Cathedral has fourteen bays along the length of the aisle, with a number of ambulatory and radiating chapels at the east end. The cathedral ambulatory contains stained glass windows dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. The roof of Norwich Cathedral contains a large number of pictoral bosses, which were installed partly as an educational tool for the illiterate population.
