There is not a lot of room at the top of the Carfax Tower to put a tripod for pictures. The roof here is not flat, but pointed with a narrow walkway around the perimeter, wide enough for one person. In this panoramic image you can see the entrance to the roof from the tower. This is taken looking down the High Street, and the spire of St Mary the Virgin stands high above the other buildings. That is probably the best vantage point over Oxford.

The best of these is probably the spire of St Mary the Virgiin, seen down the High Street in this panorami image. To the left of this is the top of the Radcliffe Camera.

Carfax Tower is all that remains of St. Martin's church that was built in 1818. The rest of the church was demolished in 1896 as part of a road widening project. There are 99 steps up the tower to the viewing platform at the top. It is on the southeast corner of the Clarendon Shopping Centre.
