St Michael at the North Gate - Tower - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
There is not a lot of room at the top of the Carfax Tower to put a tripod for pictures. The roof here is not flat, but pointed with a narrow walkway around the perimeter, wide enough for one person. In this panoramic image you can see the entrance to the roof from the tower. This is taken looking down the High Street, and the spire of St Mary the Virgin stands high above the other buildings. That is probably the best vantage point over Oxford.

Panorama from the top of the tower of St Michael at the North Gate Church in Oxford giving a panoramic view over the city. This is one of 4 towers or spires from which one can see over the city. The best of these is probably the spire of St Mary the Virgiin, and another is the Carfax Tower.
St Michael at the North Gate stood at the north gate of the old city wall. This Saxon church dates from about 1010, and is the oldest building in Oxford. The church tower contains the cell door of the cell in Bocardo Prison next door that held the Oxford Martyrs, who were burned at the stake in 1555 and 1556 in what is now Broad Street which at that time was outside the city walls.
