Cutty Sark - Further Information

The Cutty Sark, the last tea clipper on earth, is a major tourist attraction in Greenwich set up as a museum ship in a dry dock. Built in 1869, she was the last clipper vessel made, named after a short chemise known in Scotland as a 'cutty sark'. Entrance to the Cutty Sark is free to London Pass holders. Currently, the Cutty Sark is undergoing restoration and is closed to the public.

Originally, the Cutty Sark served as a merchant vessel on the lucrative tea routes between London and China. She later sailed on the Australian wool trade route, completing one sailing from 102Australia to England in just 67 days.

In 1895, the Cutty Sark was sold to Ferreira, a Portuguese firm, whose sailors referred to her as the 'Pequena Camisola' (Little Shirt) - a direct translation of the Scottish 'Cutty Sark.' In 1916 she was dismasted by a storm off the Cape of Good Hope and remasted as a barquentine ship with 3 masts. Captain Wilfred Dowman brought the Cutty Sarkin 1922 and restored here. She was then used for training until being moved to her dry dock in 1954.

The Cutty Sark is part of the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site, which also includes the Old Royal Naval College, National Maritime Museum, Queen's House and Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park. All these attractions are within walking distance of the Cutty Sark.
