This looked like a lake or large pond. It was not possible to see from the ground if it was connected at all to the River Colne itself. The line of trees around the lake made a great backdrop, reflected in the water along with the clouds. Much of the lake was covered with green water plants, through which the ducks carved temporary paths, only to have them close in behind them. From the satellite image on the Google map of Colchester it seems this area is connected to the river through the trees at the northern edge.

Panorama taken from the banks of a lake or pond beside the River Colne in Colchester. This lake lies to the east of Castle Park, close to Colchester Castle Museum. The river is popular with anglers who can be seen fishing along the banks of the river. There is a cycle path along the banks of the river, which starts close to Middle Mill Weir and lead almost all the way to Wivenhoe.
