This panorama was shot late in a summer day looking over the River Colne in Wivenhoe. The tide was out, and the small river was flowing through a central channel in the mud to the sea. The panoramic picture shows some of the new developments along the banks and the view to the marshes on the other side. The developments along here are so new that they do not show up on the satellite pictures of the Google map.

The River Colne continues it's journey from Colchester to the sea through Wivenhoe. The river here is very tidal. Wivenhoe gets it's name from 'Wifa's hoh' (spur of land). The river here cuts through a gravel ridge and this is still the lowest place where the stream can be forded at low tide. By the time of the Normans, this Saxon village was large enough to have a water mill. Now the banks of the Colne here have been built up with apartments and flats. The far side is an undeveloped marsh and grassland.

From Colchester take the A133 east and then turn south onto Colchester Road. Follow this into Wivenhoe. It become the The Avenue and then High Street. Park near the end of the High Street and walk south to the river.
