James Craig Tall Ship - Stern - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT

Panorama taken from the rear deck of the James Craig tall ship in Darling Harbour, Sydney. The pictures for this panorama were taken just after a huge thunderstorm had passed over the city, and it had rained so hard that the buildings on the opposite side of the harbour were hidden from view. You can see the ship in the satellite view of the Google map, but the ship is moored the other way round in that image.

James Craig Tall Ship - Stern - FURTHER INFORMATION

James Craig Tall Ship - Stern - Sydney visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'James Craig Tall Ship - Stern' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from New South Wales.

Panorama taken from the rear deck of the James Craig, a working tall ship berthed at Wharf 7, Pyrmont in Sydney harbour. At the time this panorama was photographed, she was berthed at the Sydney Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour.

Built in 1874 in Sunderland, UK by Bartram, Haswell & Company and recently restored as both a seaworthy, working ship and living museum to her illustrious past, the James Craig has survived many adventures including rounding the notorious Cape Horn 23 times.

Her maiden voyage, under the name Clan MacLeod, brought her to Peru, from whence she plied the trade routes as a cargo ship until 1900 and her sale to J Craig for use on the trans-Tasmanian trade route. As steam power revolutionised shipping during the early 1900's, the James Craig became uneconomical as a slower vessel, so relocated to New Guinea where her fittings were stripped out and her use saw her become a copra hulk, hauling coconut husks (traded for their multi-utilised oils).

The advent of the First World War saw a shortage of cargo ships and at this time, James Craig returned to Sydney for refitting and a return to trade service. In 1925, she became a coal transporting ship and continued in service until beached in 1932 when her moorings broke.

She lay abandoned until 1972 when a team of volunteers from the Sydney Heritage Fleet refloated her and began restoration works which were eventually, painstakingly, completed in time for her relaunch in 1997. As of 2001, she became fully operational as a sailing ship and is currently a visitor attraction in Sydney harbour welcoming visitors on board and on occasional chartered cruises.
