Panoramic photograph of Place du Tertre in Montmartre, Paris. The Place du Terte is sometimes referred to as the 'Espace Montmartre' (Montmartre Space), reflecting the area in which it is found.
Place du Tertre contains numerous market stalls and painters, and is very popular with tourists for this reason. Everywhere you go in the square people will be asking for the opportunity to paint, sketch, draw or caricature your portrait. Most of the stalls in the square sell paintings and other works of art, whilst around the edge numerous cafes and restaurants compete for the tourist trade. Because of this, Place du Tertre has become a self-fulfilling tourist attraction of Paris in it's own right.
The surrounding streets are lined with yet more tourist shops and cafes. The Dali Museum and Musée Montmartre are nearby attractions.
The square is very close to the Basilica of the Sacré Coeur and the church of Saint Pierre de Montmartre, and most people come here after visiting the Sacre Coeur church.
