Welcome to Vienna

Vienna is the anglicized version of the German name Wien. Vienna was the capital of the Austrian Empire (later the Austro-Hungarian Empire) playing a significant role in European and World politics, hosting the Congress of Vienna in 1815. After 1945, Vienna became a heavily involved in international espionage between the Western and Eastern blocs. Nowadays Vienna has a growing reputation as a popular city break destination, with good reason. Many of the major attractions (except for the Schönbrunn Palace) are found within the Innere Stadt at the city center.

The Schönbrunn Palace

This virtual tour of Vienna has dozens of panoramas taken around this most famous tourist attraction. Since the 1860s the Schönbrunn Palace (also called Schloss Schönbrunn) in Vienna has been one of the major tourist attractions in Vienna. The Schonbrunn Palace is one of the most important cultural monuments in Austria. Aside from the palace itself, the extensive grounds contain mazes, a zoo, woodlands and lakes. There are several panoramic images of the Schönbrunn Palace on this virtual tour of Vienna

Music, Opera and Theatre in Vienna.

Vienna has a long tradition of encouraging the arts, and numerous theatre houses feature on this Vienna map. Mozart and other famous composers worked here for the Emperor and other important clients. The Burgtheater with the Akademietheater is considered one of the best theatres in the German-speaking world. Other theatres of world-reputation include the Volkstheater Wien and the Theater in der Josefstadt.

For opera there is the Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper), considered one of the most important opera companies in the Europe, located in the Innere Stadt. Nearby is also the Vienna Volksoper (Vienna People's Opera) performing operettas, dance and musical theatre.

Vienna Museums and Chruches

Thousands of visitors come to Vienna for the museums and culture. We have numerous panoramic pictures form the museums on this Vienna tour. The Hofburg Imperial Palace contains the Schatzkammer (treasury) which holds the imperial jewels of the Hapsburg dynasty. As such the Hofburg ranks highly on the visitor to-do list. Also in the nearby area are the Naturhistorisches Museum (natural history) and Kunsthistorisches Museum (which contains works of art). Not to be missed is also the Museumsquartier, with the Leopold Museum, the MUMOK (Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna) and a contemporary exhibition space in the Kunsthalle Wien.

Popular museums outside the city center include the Upper Belvedere Palace, Karlskirche, the Heeregeschichtliches Musem (Museum of Military History) and the Science Museum.

The German word for church is 'Kirche'. The most famous church in Vienna is St. Stephens found in St. Stephensplatz, well known for the patterned roof. The interior is just as impressive. Nearby you can also find St. Peter's Church, the Votiv Kirche and the Jesuit Cjurch (Jesuitten Kirche), all of which are worth a visit.

Vienna Parks

The most famous park in Vienna is the Prater, big enough to contain an entire amusement park, including the Volksprater wheel, large wooded areas and open fields. The Augarten is also popular with the Viennese, where you can find an open air cinema and various walks. Vienna is also blessed by being surrounded by wooded hills on the northern edge.
