Mechelen city is near Antwerp, in the Flanders region of Belgium. The municipality is comprised of Mechelen itself and the nearby villages of Nekkerspoel, Battel, Walem, Heffen, Leest, Hombeek, and Muizen. The river Dijle flows through the city inspiring the name 'Dijlestad' (or Dijle City).
Attractions around Mechelen include the impressive St Rumbold's Cathedral on Grand Market Square. A UNESCO World Heritage Listed Building, St Rumbolds is a Baroque masterpiece of architecture, especially it's high tower. The Brusselpoort is a 12th century gate, the last remaining gate to the city. The Palace of Margaret of York is now the City Theatre and one of the finest renaissance buildings north of the Alps. There are several UNESCO listed buildings around the city, noted for their historical importance or their outstanding architecture. Set in the heart of the industrial belt between Brussels and Antwerp, Mechelen lies about 25 km from each city making it a popular residential area for city commuters and industrial workers involved in the manufacturing industry or the services based at the seaport.
