On January 26th 1788 Captain Arthur Phillip (later, the first Governor) landed in Camp Cove at Port Jackson in Sydney's Harbour. There he proclaimed Australia as a British Colony. Laings Point is on the cliffs above the beach. This picture shows one of the canons installed here in time past to protect the harbour. Laings Point offers a commanding position over the entrance to the harbour and had been fortified many times since the 18th century including being the site of an anti-submarine net protecting Sydney during WW2.

When not serving as a gateway to into Sydney harbour, this area typically has been a fishing area. A marine biological station was built in the late 19th century at the southern end of Camp Cove to study the lagoon and effects of currents on the sandstone precipices and marine wildlife.

Laings Point is a nature reserve and protected conservation area, often better known as Green Point. The surrounding area is a quiet and highly affluent suburb of Sydney with property values at the highest end of the market. As an exclusive residential area, the beach lacks tourist facilities and is mostly frequented by locals.
