Sydney Maritime Museum - FURTHER INFORMATION
Sydney Maritime Museum - Sydney visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Sydney Maritime Museum' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from New South Wales.
Panorama taken wharf-side at the the Australian National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour next to the HMAS Vampire and James Craig tall ship berthed nearby.
The National Maritime Museum, a few minutes walk north of the Pyrmont Bridge, is home to the Daring class destroyer, HMAS Vampire, the Oberon class submarine HMAS Onslow and the Attack class patrol boat the HMAS Advance. All of which are open to guided tours. At the time this panorama was taken, the James Craig tall ship was also berthed here.
Indoors, the museum offers extensive exhibitions ranging from commercial seafaring, the earliest settlers in Australia, the Australian navy past and present, navigation, how passengers fared on the perilously long voyage to Australia through the infamous Southern Oceans, sea-links with the United States of America, martime leisure and recreational pursuits including yachting, sailing and water-sports.
There is also an exhibit to the legendary HMB Endeavour, a replica of Capt James Cook's famous ship of discovery. This replica has undertaken extensive voyages during the early 2000's raising awareness through the HM Bark Endeavour Foundation. She has since transferred via the government to the care of the National Maritime Museum who have done considerable renovation work to continue to allow visitors, both at the museum and on ports of call during expeditions, to enjoy exploring this important 18th century square-rigger and vital part of Australian history.
Further to these popular exhibitions, the Museum also has strong educational ties through it's work with the schools program and research facilities for academics and professionals. It maintains the register of historical ships and works in maritime archaeology to preserve libraries and artifact collections from photographs to fittings and ships.
