The Main Quad of Stanford University contains the oldest buildings of the university, built between 1887 and 1891. Most of the Main Quad is lined with sandstone arcades faced with arches. In the quad are numerous planting areas with palm trees. The style is distinctive to Northern California, and was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed the layout of Central Park in New York. The Main Quad is the scene of various campus celebrations including Convacation, Full Moon on the Quad and is also the scene in part of the graduation celebrations.

This panoramic image shows the Main Quad itself. In it you can see the Stanford Memorial Church on the southern side of the Quad. A path through the northern edge leads through the Memorial Court to The Oval. The famous Hoover Tower stands to the east of the Main Quad.

From San Fransisco take the 101 towards Palo Alto for about 30 miles. Take the exit 404B onto Willow Road, then left at Middlefield Road and right onto University Avenue. This becomes Palm Drive and enters the university Campus terminating at The Oval.
