Memorial Court of Stanford University links The Oval to the Main Quad via Memorial Arch. At the far end of the Main Quad is the Memorial Church.

Memorial Court is surrounded by sandstone buildings and contains the bronzes of the Burghers of Calais by Rodin. It remembers an event during the 100 Years War in Europe when Edward III of England laid siege to Calais in 1347. The city failed to lift the siege, and Edward said he would spare the city if six of the leading rulers surrendered to him wearing almost nothing but nooses and carrying the keys to the city and the castle. Eustache de Saint Pierre and five others volunteered, expecting to be executed, but were spared on the intervention of Philippa of Hainault, Edward III's Queen.

The statues used to be scattered around the campus, but were recently brought together in Memorial Court. It is a copy of the original monument still standing in Calais. Another copy can be found in the Victoria Tower Gardens next to the Houses of Parliament in London. The statues can bee seen if you zoom in on the satellite view of the Google map.

From San Fransisco take the 101 towards Palo Alto for about 30 miles. Take the exit 404B onto Willow Road, then left at Middlefield Road and right onto University Avenue. This becomes Palm Drive and enters the university Campus terminating at The Oval.
