The Cantor Arts Center is a free museum that has 24 galleries, as well as a courtyard, terraces and a sculpture garden. The full name is the 'Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University'. The museum was established in 1891 by Leland Stanford at the same time as the rest of the Unversity, and was originally known as the Leland Stanford Junior Museum. In 1906 over two thirds of the museum and it's collection was destroyed in an earthquake, and the museum closed in 1945. The museum opened in it's present form in 1999 after donations by B. Gerald Cantor and his wife Iris.
One of the highlights of the Cantor Arts Center is the Gates of Hell sculpture by Rodin. This stands in an open area just to the left of the museum building. It contains numerous other sculptures by Rodin besides the Gates of Hell. Copies of the Bhurghers of Calais are now in the Memorial Court
