The path to Cathedral Cove descends from the cliffs into Mare's Leg Cove. This is separated from Cathedral Cove itself by a long natural sea arch, which can be seen in this panorama. Out in the cove are a few small stacks sticking out of the clear blue sea. The sand here is fine and white. Because the beach has no resources and is accessible only either by boat or an hour's walk it remains quite peaceful.

Cathedral Cove is part of the Te Whanganui-A-Hei marine reserve on the Coromandel Peninsula. This is where the coastal path from the Cathedral Cove car park finally ends and descends down the cliffs after about an hour's walk. Cathedral Cove itself is accessed through the natural sea arch / cave at the northern end of the beach.

The beech at Mare's Leg Cove is sandy and the bay ideal for swimming and snorkelling. There are no amenities or refreshments available. It is also popular with sea kyakers, and a couple of sea kyaks can be seen in the water in this panoramic picture. The sea arch that leads to Cathedral Cove itself, also clearly visible, is at the left hand end of the beach.

Walk from the car park at the end of Grange Road near Hahei. Also accessible by sea kyak and boat.
