Heldenplatz is the name of the open space next to the Hofburg Palace in Vienna. It was built in the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph, during the Austrian Empire era. Heldenplatz was designed to accompany the last wing of the Hofburg, the Neue Burg, which was completed in 1913. Plans for further expansion of the square and the Palace failed when the Emperor, and Empire, fell.
The whole area is a memorial to previous conflicts including that against Napoleon in the previous century, and a 17C conflict with the Turks. Two equestrian statues of Prince Eugene of Savoy and Archduke Charles of Austria, both historical military leaders, are situated within the plaza. The Österreichische Heldendenkmal (Austrian Heroes' Monument), also known as the Heldentor or Burgtor, links the plaza with the Ring and forms a monument to the unknown soldier.
From the northwestern part of Heldenplatz you can see the part of the Ringstraße including the Parliament building, Rathaus (town hall), and the Burgtheater. Also nearby are the Museumsquarter museums.
One of the most infamous public speaches made in Heldenplatz was that made by Adolf Hitler to the Austrian people from the central balcony of the Neue Burg in 1938. This 'Anschluss' declaration proclaimed the unification, and effective annexation, of Austria with Germany in 1938. Austria was not to become a fully independent country again until 1955 when the State Treaty was signed at the Belvedere Palace.
