Panorama taken from The Causeway, two bridges standing above the Swan River joining together on Heirisson Island.
Originally a dam crossed the Swan River here. As the river channel changed, mud flats formed. Heirisson Island was formed from reclaimed land amongst the mudflats and is now a nature reserve. The Causeway, constructed in 1839 to cross these mudflats to link the Swan River colony, founded only 10 years earlier with Perth itself, came about because the earlier crossings were damaged by floodwaters. The bridge itself was flooded shortly after construction. Soon after a second bridge was built.
1905 saw the first trams crossing the bridges and post WW2 labour from out of work veterans forged the rebuilding of the Causeway yet again into their current form as road bridges.
Parkland lines either shore and if crossing here, it's well worth a visit onto Heirisson Island itself to see the colony of Grey Kangaroos living here.
