Jesuitenkirche (Jesuit Church) - FURTHER INFORMATION
Vienna virtual tour with a 360° panorama of 'Jesuitenkirche (Jesuit Church)' linked to a Google map. A Vienna attractions travel guide.
The Jesuitenkirche, also known as the Universitätkirche, is located in the old part of Vienna quite close to Stephansplatz and Stephansdom. The Jesuits moved their Viennese headquarters to this area in order to be near the university in 1620, which they controlled at the time. The church was redesigned between 1703 and 1705 by Andrea Pozzo, an Italian architect. It is one of the most ornately decorated churches in Vienna.
The Jesuits led the Counter-Reformation in Vienna and this is reflected in the dominance of the church itself. The high façade dominates Dr-Ignaz-Seipel-Platz in which it stands. Inside the ceiling is decorated with a trompe l'oeil effect frescoes which give the impression of a large dome from the back of the church. One of the most striking features are the twisted red and green marble columns. The pews are also highly decorated.
