Coromandel is one of the main towns on the Coromandel Peninsula. It is named after the HMS Coromandel that sailed into Coromandel harbour in 1820. The town and harbour used to serve the gold mining and forestry of kauri tree industries. Today the main income is from tourism. The town has a number of restaurants and cafes serving the passing tourist traffic. Although only 75km east of Auckland as the crow flies, the road which winds around the Coromandel Peninsula between the two is 190 km long.
